Do you ever feel like a parent when you clearly are not? I do, constantly.
It all started back in March of '07, while having a great day with my mother we get a phone call from the police. When we arrive to where we are suppose to be, we're bewildered. What in the hell is going on? The first thing I see is my nephew in a police man's arms. I went straight for them, holding my arms open, "Who are you?" The guy asked. "I'm the aunt," it took him a moment, but he let me hold my nephew. My nephew was just in a diper with a blanket, his feet were black from the dirt. I guess my sister-in-law had lost it, because I guess she really is nuts.
That day we found out she was using cleaning wipes, you know with chemicals and bleach and stuff, for my nephew's bottom! She also filled a bathtub full of water, and dropped the poor thing in. My brother luckily got there in time to save him from his almost, possible death. Then, she had the nerve to ask my brother why she was mad at him! My parents fought two years to keep my nephew, I've watched my mother break down in tears from the stress. We had to do so much for the state just to adopt him.
I watched my nephew take his first steps, say his first word. I was there for most of his firsts, I know how he acts when he's around others. I know what happens when he is away from my mom to long. I take care of him, I am like his mother. My brother is back in his life, after staying away for a year or so. I guess now he thinks that if my parents die, he gets his son. No, he's mine. I don't even need a kid because I've got one. I know the complications of having a child with out having to do any of the birth work.

My parents constantly say, "You were a last one, we shouldn't be doing this." They're right, I was their last child. I should have been, my father is in his fifties and my mother is in her forties. I'm two years away from being an adult. They shouldn't be the ones raising my nephew. But, I believe everything happens for a reason. I remember watching this movie about a teenage pregnancy, there was this quote that really made sense when it came to adoption. "The parents don't choose the child, the child chooses the parents." How true is that, very.
I love my nephew, like he was my own son. And, I believe that's enough for one person.
